WHAT IS LIGHT THERAPY?

Let’s face it: Light Therapy is a term that we hear all the time! We hear it referred to as a facial treatment, in LED beds, and even wall panels; but what is it really? At its core, Light Therapy can be categorized into two major arenas – Photobiomodulation (PBM) and Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBT).
PHOTOBIOMODULATION
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the metabolic and cytological response of living cells to photons of “light energy”.A concatenation of “photo” meaning light, “bio” meaning “living cells”, and “modulation” to vary or exert an influence on, the term photobiomodulation describes biochemical reactions that occur in living cells in response to light.Photobiomodulation occurs whenever living cells are exposed to natural or artificial light. When exposed to light, the cell can respond positively (e.g. giving it energy, repairing it), or may be harmful by provoking cellular apoptosis (for example using blue or ultraviolet light to kill microbial pathogens).
PHOTOBIOMODULATION THERAPY
Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBT) aka phototherapy: the therapeutic application of light (PBM) to tissue & organs to stimulate healing and regulate and encourage healthy cellular metabolism. PBT can be used to combat disease, repair injury, ameliorate pain, manage organ & immune system dysfunction, reduce inflammation, and address a variety of neurological and age-related health conditions. PBT is also used as a preemptive measure to avoid illness, prevent injury, improve brain health and cognition, promote wellness, and to enhance performance in sports & athletics.
